WeChat is ubiquitous in the FinTech space and beyond – everyone is aware of the messaging app and is one of the top 5 globally. The services it offers include, but aren’t limited to chat, wallet, and third-party services. In our article on WeChat, we wanted to explore the company’s turnaround story, from its beginnings in 2014 (when it launched the red envelope feature allowing users to send digital cash to their family members, friends, and users) to how WeChat Pay came to be used across various currencies (18) and countries (49).

Consumer internet companies have ruled the smartphone era over the last decade and a half. Now, many unicorns in this space are attempting to ease financial services to aid their core commerce layer. In this article, we provided an insight into Unicorns from the consumer internet space, which encompasses all B2C internet/mobile companies that have emerged in the last 15 years – predominantly in e-commerce, food, transportation, and media/social media, among others. We then tracked their activity in terms of providing financial services to consumers.

M-Pesa was launched in 2007 by Vodafone and Safaricom, in a geography with one of the lowest banking penetration rates in the world. This changed how transactions were conducted. How? M-Pesa required no 5G or internet connectivity; it operated through simple text messages, and a dedicated PIN helped millions of users to send money, recharge their mobile phone talk time, pay bills, and send remittances. In this article, we highlighted the geographies M-Pesa is active in, along with a look at the system’s rate of transactions (transactions per second), the total number of agents, and the active user count.
